LINCOLN PARK ZOOLOGICAL GARDENS SSP© PARTICIPATION

Throughout this web site there are many references to SSPs- Species Survival Plans established by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA). An SSP is a cooperative management program designed to ensure the continued genetic diversity of animals in captivity. Zoos throughout North America work together to pair animals based on SSP recommendations. Lincoln Park Zoo participates in more than 30 of the 70 SSP's.

Lincoln Park Zoo staff also maintains several SSP studbooks, compiling crucial genealogical data on captive animals that are used to provide breeding recommendations. Trumpeter swans, snow leopards and pygmy hippopotamus are among the studbooks managed at Lincoln Park Zoo. This icon designates species under the protection of the Species Survival Plan.
